So why is America in dangerous Biblical waters here?
The Bible contains more than 300 verses on the poor, social justice, and God's concern for both. And quite simply because budgets are moral documents. As Jim Wallis noted,
“Any budget is a moral statement of priorities, whether it's a budget created by an individual, a family, a school, a city, or a nation. It tells us, mathematically, what areas, issues, things, or people are most important to the creators of that budget,
and which are least important.”
So lets’ take a look at things in the proposed GOP budget and compare them with what is in the Bible, particularly Matthew 25. For those of you who are “red letter” Christians, here are some red letters for you. [For you heathens – HA! - being a “red letter Christian” means you pay specific attention to what Jesus said, and in many Bible translations, his words are printed in red.]
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
Let’s take a look at the proposed GOP Tax Plan. The plan may trigger cuts to Meals on Wheels, SNAP, and WIC, which help the destitute in all age groups.
The GOP has not reauthorized CHIP, which insures millions of poor children. The GOP plan eliminates the individual mandate for the Affordable Care Act, leaving even more millions of people without insurance. The GOP also plans on cutting and eventually killing Medicare and Social Security, one which covers millions of Americans health, and the other keeps millions of elderly and disable dAmericans out of poverty. See here and here.
Don’t believe me? That is the GOP plan.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” - James 1:27
If you happen to like your Biblical Explorations to include some good old-fashioned Old Testament, try these:
"Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow.'"- Deut. 27:19
"Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan." - Exodus 22:22
"Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow." - Isaiah 1:17
Furthermore, according to actual Biblical scholars (as compared to televangelists and others who try to make money off the gospel), the actual sins of Sodom and Gomorrah had nothing to do with homosexuality. The Bible itself plainly states:
– Ezekiel 16:9
The Bible tells us so.
